What is LM Studio?

LM Studio lets developers and other technical users download language models and run them through a desktop chat interface. Its documentation describes local document conversations as well as a server interface, making it useful both for reading files and for connecting an application to a model running on a nearby machine. MCP support adds tools to local-model conversations, while model and prompt settings remain under the user’s control. The current product family also includes Bionic, an agent for document work, coding and local voice transcription, alongside optional cloud inference plans. A local installation needs suitable hardware and downloaded model files before offline use; a desktop download alone does not provide the capacity of a hosted model service. Users comparing costs should separate free local execution from the Bionic cloud subscriptions and additional inference credits.
