What is Zed?

Zed is an open-source desktop code editor for developers who want to work with AI agents alongside ordinary editing and team collaboration. An agent can inspect project context, change files and run tools, while the developer follows its progress inside the editor. Changes appear in an editable unified diff, allowing the developer to refine the work and accept or reject changes before committing. Zed also supports external agents through the Agent Client Protocol and connects Model Context Protocol servers to extend an agent's available tools. Teams can share a project, chat and work together rather than moving the whole review into a separate conversation. Native downloads cover macOS, Windows and Linux; there is no supported browser edition. Hardware requirements matter: Linux needs a Vulkan 1.3 driver, and Windows requires a supported 64-bit system and DirectX 11 graphics. The Personal editor is free, but hosted AI usage has separate plan and token costs; using your own provider credentials can also incur charges from that provider. AI features can be disabled, so the editor can also be used without an agent.
